The highly successful television series is based on the treasured My Place picture book by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins. Series 1 tells the story of generations of children who all lived in the same place near a Moreton Bay Fig tree between 2009 and 1888. Each episode is set 10 years earlier than the one before and always in the same place. The child characters each have a talent for getting into some manner of trouble, and their stories are informed by the era in which they live.
Series 2 introduces new characters from 1878 to 1788 and before time. We meet Henry (1878), an inventor whose machines never actually work, and Johanna (1848) who lives with her grandmother and is searching for her father. We are also introduced Waruwi (1788), an Indigenous girl who encounters a cow for the first time and Dan (1788), a cabin boy on the First Fleet who tries to compensate Waruwi for her stolen dog. And Bunda (Beforetime), who is being taught bush skills by his father but is more concerned with competing with his brother. These and many other stories are about the children’s adventures and their empowerment.
To support teachers using the TV Series 1 and 2 in the classroom, is the My Place Teachers’ Guide DVD-ROM. The decade timeline has been extended from the 1870s to prior to the 1770s citing selected Indigenous and non-Indigenous histories and there is an all new section for Geography (Years 3–6). There are also 39 additional clips, 156 new teaching activities and student activity sheets (History and English), and new interviews with Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins. The ‘Behind the Scenes’ section has been updated with the new scripts, images, poster, and other information.
