Human Rights Today, Discussing the issues, Accepting the challenge contributes to Amnesty International Australia’s Human Rights Education program, inspiring students to

  • support a global culture of human rights
  • become informed and articulate about local and global human rights issues
  • be committed to fundamental human rights values
  • recognise their own value and dignity and that of others
  • experience working for human rights as fun, challenging and rewarding
  • be confident of their ability to make a difference
  • and become equipped to work individually and with others to take action for a better world.

This student and teacher resource aims to assist Years 9–10 students learn about the importance and the realities of human rights. Students explore how human rights are defined and formalised, how people experience their rights, how people and organisations defend human rights, and a range of ways they take steps to defend human rights. Articles, case studies, diagrams, photos, tables and maps assist these explorations. Students are encouraged to communicate about the materials, deliberate about their responses and investigate more deeply about the issues raised.

The material is a valuable stimulus for all global citizens, particularly those who value a ‘fair go’ for all, accept a diversity of cultures and opinions, and show compassion for others. It is a useful resource for the learning areas of Studies of Society and Environment/Humanities, English, Values, and Civics and Citizenship.
