ILPO P/K-7 is a planning tool for Teachers of children aged approximately 4 to 13. The companion document, ILPO 8-12 caters to students aged approximately 13 to 17 years of age.
ILPO P/K-7 is an information literacy planning document that gathers together many aspects of curriculum planning. By using the accompanying disc, ILPO forms the basis upon which schools are able to create a comprehensive, cohesive and sequentially developed school-based information literacy program.
The following elements are embedded in ILPO:
- The Information Process;
- Critical thinking and problem solving;
- Information Technology skills, including computer skills;
- Process skills from National and International documents.
With the inclusion of the disc containing all the Planner files, it is intended that the document be modified and adapted so that a school-based version of ILPO may be generated.
ILPO is aligned to, and comprehensively validated against attainment levels outlined in National and International documents. The document has been structured into year levels to facilitate individual teacher planning.
ILPO has been designed as a teacher planning tool and is used when planning units of work, by classroom or specialist teachers such as teacher-librarians, so that information literacy skills can be sequentially integrated into learning activities and assessment tasks.
ILPO comprises two major components - the Year Level Planning Overviews and the 6 Information Process Overviews. The sequential and developmental nature of ILPO is evident in the Process Overviews, giving an overview of skill development through Years P/K - 7.
A whole school approach to integrating information literacy across Years P/K-12 will result in the student’s exposure to a comprehensive development of skills for lifelong learning. This in turn will have a direct impact on the ability of the individual to function confidently and effectively in the workplace and in our ever-changing world.
