This big book offers an excellent way to develop literacy and introduce knowledge and appreciation of our Asian neighbours to the classroom. Self contained double page spreads display appealing full colour photographs, fact files, board games and stories of daily life which capture the distinctive physical and cultural aspects of life in Japan.

The teacher guide contains additional information, classroom activities designed to develop reading and writing, speaking and listening skills, and blackline masters.

Snapshots of Asia. [Kit] Carlton South, Vic: Curriculum Corp., 1998. 6 big books, 1 teacher guide. (Access Asia) ISBN 1 86366 6413 0 Ledger, Richard and Ledger, Sue.

This package provides an introduction to the countries of Indonesia, China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Thailand. It includes six big books, and a teacher guide that includes blackline masters. This is an excellent presentation in a sturdy vinyl box. The layout of text and illustrations is balanced and it is easy to access the information, which is up-to-date. The maps are clear and the photographs are superb. Traditional and contemporary perspectives are shown through the photographs. Glossaries are included in English and the appropriate language. This is a good cross-curricula package, which allows teachers to select either a country or a theme as a starting point (i.e. music, sport). Competent Year 3 students upward will find the material enticing and it can be used with Lower secondary students who are less able readers. Highly recommended.

Cultural and geographical knowledge of Asian countries is provided in a context suitable for use in primary classrooms. The big books feature double-page spreads covering thirteen topics, e.g. `School`, `Cooking` `Board game` and `A folk tale`. A variety of text types (including recount, diary, recipe) are used, along with words from the language, maps and excellent photographs. Best suited to students from about nine years, the book has some features which, together with the advertising literature target younger children who are likely to find the sentence structures and geographical concepts rather too complex. `Teacher guide` contains blank maps, blackline masters and some valuable suggestions for lesson planning.
