Emma Barnard and Tom Cho have a big food project to do in Mr Winters' class and it’s making them really hungry! They never knew there were so many ways to prepare and eat rice.

Through interviews with people in their community and research in libraries and on the Internet, Emma and Tom discover that rice brings many surprising histories and connections to the countries of Asia. They gather fact bites, photos, maps, stories and drawings to enrich their knowledge of rice and its history in our region, and collect traditional rice recipes from nine Asian countries along the way.

This stunningly illustrated resource is presented as a colourful large-format project book that students will find immediately appealing. Teaching activities to support SOSE/HSIE outcomes are available at www.curriculum.edu.au/accessasia/bigfoodbook

Reading Time, magazine of the Children's Book Council of Australia

Following the production of a class project on food, in particular rice as seen by two young students Tom and Emma, makes this handsome and informative book easily accessible to students and teachers alike. The focus on Asian countries - China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, The Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam is vibrantly evoked through the study of food and customs and the production of a rice dish typical of a given country eg rice paper rolls for Vietnam, and chocolate rice from the Philippines.

The book has a detailed map of Asia in relation to Australia, a glossary of words associated with the text and their country of origin and pronunciation, a whole menu featuring the rice dishes studied and information on further links with the project - www.curriculum.edu.au/accessasia/bigfoodbook.

It is a valuable information book for stage two classes in primary schools or for budding cooks at home.
