Active Readers

Welcome to the Active Readers website. This site provides a handy central reference to the topics covered in each book, an overview of the Active Readers approach, and handy tips for teaching comprehension successfully.

Active Readers is a three-book series which celebrates students as individuals, embracing the unique way in which they connect with text, share their understandings and explore unfamiliar territory.

Each book employs six key comprehension strategies:

• Prediction/prior knowledge
• Think aloud
• Text structure
• Visualising
• Questioning
• Summarising

Regardless of text type or complexity, the Active Readers series assists teachers to demonstrate and apply comprehension strategies responsively and in different combinations. There are interconnected topics across the three levels so that students progressing through the stages of reading competence can remain engaged in the reading experience.
